The forts in San Juan, Puerto Rico are a symbol of the historical strength the small island has displayed. It goes way back to when other countries were trying to invade. The fort was named after Spain’s King Philip II. It protected Puerto Rico from the Pirates and other invaders who tried to snatch the island and its treasures that belonged to Spain.
Today, it stands 6 levels tall in the harbor of Old San Juan. It has had many enlargements and extensions since it was first built. The fierce ocean is the only thing you see when you're looking ahead.
Many tours are offered to visitors who come to see the fort. There's also a small theater that's located where the dungeon used to be, many years back, and it shows you a short film on the history of El Morro. The fort has all kinds of historical artifacts, like stuff owned by the actual shoulders that guarded the place and the watchtowers where they kept an eye out for invaders. There's cannons that were also used by early soldiers. The place is massive; many levels and hallways are scattered through the structure. It took me a whole day to get through to see everything!
Exploring the fort is not only a great travel experience, but it's also an amazing learning experience. El Morro is one of my favorite places because it captures the history of Puerto Rico and signifies how it's developed as an island and a civilization.
